Tom McEvoy
Tom McEvoy was born November 14, 1944 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and first learned to play poker when he was five years old. McEvoy won the 1983 World Series of Poker main event when he overcame Rod Peate in head to head action. He has 4 WSOP bracelets and over $1,700,000 in tournament winnings.
McEvoy was also the first main event winner to earn his buy-in through a satellite tournament. Satellites and Super-Satellites are highly popular today, particularly online. McEvoy is staunchly opposed to smoking and has been a leader in the effort to make poker tournaments non smoking events. In 2002, he convinced Benny Binion to make the WSOP a non-smoking tournament by agreeing to give him poker lessons.
McEvoy has authored or coauthored over a dozen books on poker, including his most famous, “Championship No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold'em” which was written with T. J. Cloutier.
